About the Training:
All of the General Session presentations will be conducted by Paul Greenwood and will be on ways to recognize & prevent elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Elder abuse takes many forms. One is financial exploitation. It’s the caller who gets a donation to a bogus charity, the internet scheme that gains access to an account, or a daughter or grandson with a gambling habit or drug addiction who steals jewelry, cash, or credit cards. Millions of seniors are victims each year, with total losses estimated at more than $36 billion.
Then comes physical abuse, by family members, longtime friends or hired caregivers, who often lash out when confronted by the seniors who discover they’ve been ripped off by the people they’ve trusted. They are left malnourished, dehydrated, over-medicated, under-medicated, or forced to live in unhealthy conditions. Elders can become victims because their cognitive skills and memories have diminished, especially in their 80s and 90s. Plus, elder abuse is primed for growth.
The U. S. Population is aging. By 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 or older. This session will help to educate those who respond to suspected elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation and those who provide care services to the elderly to help them to recognize and to prevent these tragedies.
Newly retired Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood was a lawyer in England for 13 years. After relocating to San Diego in 1991 he passed the California Bar and joined the DA's office in 1993. For twenty-two years Paul headed up the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit at the San Diego DA’s Office. In 1999 California Lawyer magazine named Paul as one of their top 20 lawyers of the year in recognition of his pioneering efforts to pursue justice on behalf of senior citizens. He has prosecuted over 750 felony cases of both physical and financial elder abuse, & ten murder cases, including one death penalty case. In March 2018 Paul retired from the San Diego DA’s office. Paul now spends much of his post retirement time consulting on elder abuse cases and providing trainings to law enforcement and Adult Protective Service agencies across the country and internationally. He is also involved as the criminal justice board member of National Adult Protective Services Association.
