World Elder Abuse and Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2024
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), June 15th, was established by the Inernational Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in 2006 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. Even with projects such as the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life and annual themes for the awareness day campaign, aging adults experiencing abuse, exploitation, mistreatment or neglect may not receive the same level of support or understanding as different generations. US government data shows that people aged 65 and over grew nearly five times faster than the total population over the 100 years from 1920 to 2020, according to the 2020 census.
In this interactive and engaging forum, advocates, community, and allied professionals will gain a more holisted understanding of elder justice and anti-violence prevention and intervention for older adults. Participants will be introduced to the systems and supports involved in elder abuse and will better understand a community coordinated response to harm. Participants will leave this training with an increased knowledge of resource and referral options, as well as steps to integrate elder justice into their work.
What? Half day, in person training to learn more about elder justice + preventing abuse, exploitation, mistreatment, and neglect in older adults.
Who? All are welcome to attend. Presentations will include information for community members + financial, healthcare, legal, and social work professionals.
*Registration is required for this free training. Certificates of attendance will be provided upon completion of an evaluation survey. 3 CEs for nursing and social work available. Law enforcement PIC available.
When? Monday, June 17th, 2024, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
